Woman declared dead 'comes back to life' in body bag on way to her own funeral
The elderly woman was declared dead at a hospital in Majorca, Spain, and was being transported to a funeral parlour when staff were shocked to discover she was still alive
A woman who was declared dead at a hospital 'came back to life' while being transported to her own funeral. After her health took a turn for the worse, she was pronounced dead and moved from the mortuary to the funeral parlour in preparation for her burial.
However, staff were reportedly horrified when they discovered the elderly woman had a pulse and even moved her fingers. Paramedics at the Son Valenti funeral parlour in Palma, Majorca confirmed she was alive and rushed her back to the city's Juan March de Bunyola Hospital.
Her current condition remains unknown. An internal inquiry is now underway to determine what led to the erroneous declaration of her death.
This incident echoes a similar case in February last year, when morgue workers were left terrified as a woman seemingly returned from the dead, moving inside a body bag. The unnamed patient, who showed signs of severe malnutrition and had no respiratory or brain activity, was declared dead.
But after five hours inside a body bag at the San Juan de Dios General Hospital in Guatemala, she suddenly began to move. Morgue workers were left in shock as they rushed to alert doctors after the woman was found alive, leading to her readmission to the emergency room, reports the Daily Record.
Despite their best efforts to resuscitate her, she showed no vital signs and was declared dead for the second time.
The hospital has extended its deepest sympathies to the family of a young woman who tragically died during what's been described as a 'difficult period' they're facing. The reasons behind her death are currently cloaked in mystery, and it's not clear whether there's an ongoing formal investigation.
A spokesperson from the hospital spoke of the young woman's critical condition when she was admitted, highlighting "severe malnutrition" along with a past ridden with seizures and cerebral palsy complications.
They went on to say: "After 30 minutes of medical efforts, she was declared deceased and her body was transferred to the morgue as part of established protocol."
In a similarly astonishing event last year in Texas, 16 year old Sammy Berko experienced a cardiac arrest at a rock climbing gym and was initially ruled dead.
Defying all odds after two relentless hours of CPR, he survived, with a doctor hailing him as a "literal miracle".
Sammy's mother, Jennifer, described the harrowing episode: "He climbed to the top of the wall, rang the bell, as we were told, and then his body went limp, and it looked like he was either playing around or passed out. They weren't quite sure and when they realised he was unresponsive, they lowered him slowly."
In the aftermath of the frightening ordeal, Sammy's heartbroken parents were offered a chance for a private goodbye, having suffered the devastating loss of another son, Frankie, three years earlier.
Jennifer, while recalling the heart-wrenching instant, expressed: "I started talking to him, just telling him how much I love him and sorry that we didn't know how to save him. Suddenly, as I started praying, my husband said, 'Oh my gosh, he's moving'."
In an astonishing turn of events from June of the previous year, Bella Montoya Castro, aged 76, was declared dead at a hospital in southwest Quito, Ecuador. Astoundingly, she showed signs of life during her own funeral just hours later.
Bella's son, Gilber Barberan, divulged that guests placing flowers on the casket heard something unusual coming from inside the box. They soon realised it was none other than Bella herself making the noises.
