Mumbai News Live Updates: Nana Ambole, a former corporator, on Sunday joined Deputy CM Eknath Shinde’s faction of the Shiv Sena, Shinde wrote on X (formerly Twitter) informed on X. He was also appointed as Worli-Shivadi assembly coordinator. Sena secretary Sanjay More and former senior corporator Ram Repale, among other high-ranking office bearers in the party, were present on this occasion. Ambole, who joined the BJP after leaving the Sena, contested in the Assembly election in 2024 as an independent candidate but lost.

BMC invokes Disaster Management Act: On the fourth day of the indefinite strike by the Mumbai Water Tanker Association (MWTA), the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Sunday invoked the Disaster Management Act for requisitioning all water tankers, wells, and ponds in Mumbai. On April 10, MWTA went on an indefinite strike — sparking acute water shortages — in response to a notification by the civic body to owners and operators of borewells and ring-wells in Mumbai asking them to either shut those facilities or obtain a licence from the Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA).

Upper-floor tenements included in DRP: The Maharashtra government has begun including upper-floor tenement residents – who have traditionally been considered ineligible for rehablitation under the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) guidelines – in the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP), providing them with an opportunity for homeownership. A government resolution (GR) passed on October 4, 2024, brought upper-floor residents in Dharavi within the ambit of rehabilitation. These occupants are eligible for 300 sq ft houses outside Dharavi but within MMR.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Sunday claimed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during his recent visit to Raigad fort, addressed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on a first-name basis.

BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar hit back at Raut, saying some people have the habit of making preposterous claims, while his party's member of legislative council (MLC) Prasad Lad wondered whether the Sena (UBT) leader has gone mad.

Talking to reporters, Raut said Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis should direct that a case be registered against Shah for insulting the much-revered Maratha warrior king.--PTI

Mumbai News Live Updates: Shiv Sena (UBT) announces one-month protest against water scarcity

The Shiv Sena (UBT) will hold a month-long agitation in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to address the city's severe water scarcity.

Currently, residents receive water only once every eight days, according to the Leader of the Opposition in the legislative council Ambadas Danve, who spoke at a party meeting.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders alleged that the progress of the water pipeline project from Jayakwadi Dam to the city has been sluggish, prompting the need for this initiative.

The agitation is set to begin on April 16 and will continue until May 15, Danve announced.--PTI

An accused in the sexual assault and the murder of a minor girl in Kalyan East has allegedly died by suicide in the toilet next to his cell in Taloja jail.

After Vishal Gawli’s death came to light on Sunday morning, the jail authorities informed the Kharghar police and his family in Kalyan of the incident.

The Thane police arrested Gawli, 35, and his second wife, Sakshi, 25, in December 2024 after he allegedly raped and murdered the girl in Kalyan who had gone missing. Sakshi allegedly helped him dispose of the body, which was found a day later.

Mumbai News Live Updates: Case against IPS officer for raping doctor under pretext of marriage

Police have registered a case against a 30-year-old IPS officer for allegedly raping a woman doctor in Maharashtra's Nagpur after promising to marry her, officials said on Sunday.

The woman approached the Imamwada Police Station in Nagpur with a complaint recently, they said.

According to the complainant, she and the man had got in touch through social media platform Instagram, an official said.

The accused was then preparing for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exams, while the woman was pursuing MBBS course.

After they became friends, the accused promised to marry the woman and got into a physical relationship with her, they said. Based on her complaint, a case on charges of rape has been registered against the IPS officer and further probe is underway.

Mumbai News Live Updates: Passenger held with Rs 6.3 crore gold hidden in his shoes at Mumbai airport

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has arrested a passenger from Mumbai airport after recovering gold valued at Rs 6.3 crore which he concealed in his shoes, an official said.

In a follow-up action, the DRI sleuths also arrested here a prospective buyer, who was part of the gold smuggling syndicate, the official said on Saturday.

Based on specific information, officials from the apex anti-smuggling agency intercepted a passenger after he arrived at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport here from Bangkok.

A search led to the recovery of 6.7 kg of smuggled gold bars valued at Rs 6.3 crore, hidden in the shoes he was wearing and he was arrested, the official said.

During his questioning, the name of a prospective buyer of the smuggled yellow metal came up and the latter was also subsequently arrested, the official added.

Mumbai News Live Updates: Water tankers’ body warns to continue strike despite BMC stay on notices

As the water tanker strike, launched by Mumbai Water Tanker Association (MWTA), continues for the third day, the body has maintained that it will not be revoked until their demands are met.

This is despite the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) deferring the terms of its notification to the owners of borewells and ring well operators until June 15.

The strike began after BMC started issuing notices to the owners, asking them to either cease supply of water to tankers or obtain a fresh license from the Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA).

Mumbai News Live Updates: Sex racket busted in Navi Mumbai; three held, six women rescued Thane

The Navi Mumbai police have busted a sex racket in a raid at a lodging and boarding facility and arrested three persons, an official said on Saturday.

Based on a tip-off, the Anti-Human Trafficking Cell (AHTC) of the Crime Branch raided the premises in the Narpoli area of Kon in Panvel on Thursday, the official said.

Three persons were arrested, and six women were rescued from the establishment, he said.

Senior inspector Pritviraj Ghorpade said the police used a decoy customer to bust the racket and arrested the manager of the lodge and two other employees.

Union Home minister Amit Shah is set to visit Raigad Fort Saturday on the 345th death anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji.

BJP MP Udayanraje Bhosale, who is the descendent of the Maratha ruler, said Friday that he has urged Shah to make an announcement about the construction of a Shivaji memorial in Mumbai.

“It was decided to have a monument for Maratha king Shivaji in the Arabian Sea near Mumbai. Its foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and we were also present on the occasion. However, the work did not start, most likely due to environmental issues,” Bhosale said in Pune after visiting Phule Wada on the birth anniversary of social reformer Mahatma Jyotiba Phule.
