Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 4 – Cambodia Prime Minister Hun Manet sent a letter to US President Donald Trump requesting negotiation on the tariff implementation on Cambodian exports.

“In response to your recent announcement on 2 April 2025, imposing a 49 per cent  tariff on Cambodian products from 9 April 2025, Cambodia proposes to negotiate with Your Honourable's administration at the earliest convenient time and wishes to request that your esteemed government consider postponing the above-mentioned tariff implementation,” according to the letter seen by Fresh News on Friday (Apr. 4).

“I would like to inform Your Honourable President that the existing practice of Cambodia’s maximum tariff rate tops at 35 per cent. In expression of our good faith and in spirit of strengthening our bilateral trade relations, Cambodia is committed to promote US based product imports with an immediate reduction of 19 product categories from our maximum 35 per cent tariff bound rate to 5 per cent applied tariff rate.

In this regard, I have also tasked my Minister of Commerce to correlate with the US Trade Representative.

Cambodia remains fully committed to engaging in constructive and productive dialogue with the US government to further deepen our bilateral trade, so that both nations and peoples can enjoy the tangible benefits from these significant trade relations.”
