Gandhinagar: The Union govt informed in the ongoing Parliament session that 59 cases of human trafficking were registered in Gujarat in the five years ending 2022. Of the 163 persons who were trafficked, 158 were rescued by investigation agencies, the govt added in reply to a question in the upper house of Parliament.
Interestingly, according to data provided by the Union govt, trials were not completed in any of the cases registered between 2018 and 2022, and there were no convictions in any of the cases in the state.
Barring the years 2019 and 2022, investigating agencies were successful in rescuing all the victims of human trafficking in Gujarat, the Union govt said in its reply. In 2019, 18 of the 22 victims of human trafficking were rescued, while in 2022, 11 of the 12 victims of human trafficking were rescued.
MP Ashok Kumar Mittal sought state-wise details of human trafficking cases reported, registered, investigated, prosecuted, and the number of persons rescued in the country during the last five years. In a written response, the Union govt, quoting NCRB data, provided figures of the cases reported, the number of persons trafficked, the number of victims rescued, and the number of cases where trial is completed.
"The responsibility for preventing and countering the crime of human trafficking vests with respective states/Union territories; however, the govt of India supplements the efforts of the states and Union territories by providing them guidelines on preventing and countering the crime of human trafficking, in the form of various advisories issued from time to time," Union minister of state for women and children, Savitri Thakur, said in her written reply.
