Minister Bisonó: “It’s too early to assess the impact of U.S. tariffs on the Dominican Republic”

Santo Domingo.- Industry and Commerce Minister Víctor Bisonó stated that it is too early to take a definitive stance on the 10% tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on the Dominican Republic and other nations. He emphasized the need to assess how these tariffs will affect specific products, such as aluminum, raw materials, and exported goods. Additionally, Bisonó highlighted the importance of monitoring the responses from other countries facing similar tariffs.

Bisonó also noted that the Dominican Republic currently benefits from the lowest tariffs among its competitors, with many other countries facing higher rates in various sectors. He mentioned that the government is organizing a multi-sector meeting to evaluate the potential impact of these measures. Regarding possible renegotiations, he indicated that the situation could be revisited based on developments in the U.S. Congress.

Despite the new tariffs, Bisonó reassured that the trade balance between the Dominican Republic and the United States remains positive, and exports continue to perform strongly.
