We can qualify for the World Cup – Ritcher …as Gladiators 5 depart for Morocco

We can qualify for the World Cup – Ritcher …as Gladiators 5 depart for Morocco

Namibia’s Futsal Gladiators 5 have set their sights on securing a spot at the 2025 Fifa Futsal Women’s World Cup in the Philippines, as they head to Morocco for the Afcon qualifiers.

Speaking at a send-off ceremony held at Government Park in Windhoek, Charlotte Martha Ritcher, the youngest player in the squad, yesterday expressed confidence in the team’s ability to qualify.

“With the quality we have in the squad, I believe we can make it to the World Cup,” she said.

The Afcon tournament serves as the qualifying pathway to the World Cup, with Namibia placed in Group A, alongside host nation Morocco and Cameroon.

Ritcher, just 18 years old, is excited about the opportunity to compete alongside seasoned players. “This is a huge opportunity for me and the entire team. I am honoured to be part of this squad, and grateful to the coach for recognising my hard work,” she said.

Beyond the competition, she hopes the tournament will provide a platform for scouts to notice her talent. Reflecting on the team’s preparations, Ritcher said training has been intense, but productive.

“The last few days of training have been tough, but I think we are ready. With the group of players we have, I am confident that we can secure a World Cup spot.”

Also speaking at the send-off ceremony, newly-appointed Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture, Dino Ballotti expressed confidence in the team’s potential.

“Last year, I watched the men’s team in the qualifiers, and I was impressed. I know this is your first time, but I am confident you will do a great job. Go out there and wear the Namibian badge with pride, your country stands behind you,” he said.

Adding her two cents, sport and education minister Sanet Steenkamp urged the team to give their all on the court. “I believe in this team. You have the potential, and as a nation, we are 100% behind you. When you step onto the field, play with pride and give it your best,” she added.

Freddy Mwiya, the chief administrator at Namibia Sport Commission (NSC), said he is excited to see what the girls will achieve in Morrocco.

“I am happy that we are sending this team to Morrocco. This is a huge opportunity to promote the country as well as the girls getting their shine at an international stage. I am hopeful that when they return from the competition, we will give them a good welcome,” he added.
