Cook and jobless man charged with human trafficking

BATU PAHAT: A cook and an unemployed man have pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here to a charge of trafficking a man and a woman for labour exploitation in Myanmar.

Wong Jun Wei, 26, and Jasper Yap En Wai, 20, claimed trial after the charges were read out to them before Magistrate Arun Noval Dass on Thursday (April 3).

They are jointly charged with trafficking Tan Kai Lun, 26, and Wong Chee Fun, 34, for labour exploitation in Yatai in Shwekokko, Myanmar, between Dec 15 and Feb 14.

The charge is framed under Section 12 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (Atipsom) Act 2007 read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, for a criminal act committed by several persons with a common intention.

The accused face a prison sentence of not more than 20 years and a possible fine if convicted.

No bail was offered for both accused owing to the seriousness of the case. The court set Monday (April 7) for mention and the submission of documents.
