Minister of Health and Wellness Dr. Michael Darville said yesterday that the government is working to resolve outstanding issues with the Bahamas Doctors Union.

“With the doctors union, we’re back at the table,” Darville said.

“I can definitely say that the Public Hospitals Authority (PHA) as well as the Ministry of Finance, and our negotiators are definitely at the table with the Doctors Union.”

Darville said, “I would like to see this matter resolved sooner than later, but from my understanding things are progressing.”

In January, the Bahamas Doctors Union and the Bahamas Nurses Union participated in a sickout that lasted for two days.

The sick out, which was spearheaded by Trade Union Congress (TUC) Leader Obie Ferguson, was due to concerns of outstanding overtime pay, unresolved industrial agreements and other matters.

After the sick out, Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis said that he was ready to sign a deal with the doctors.

A day later, Minister of Labour and Public Service Pia Glover-Rolle said that discussions with the union were progressing and hoped to be signed by March 2025.

“We’ve made progress last night and I look forward to making more progress over the next day or two,” Glover-Rolle said.

“The goal is to wrap it up as soon as possible... We made some progress, [and] we have some other items we are working on.

“... We are all hopeful that we will have a resolution very, very soon.”

However months later, an agreement has not been made.
