Former Manchester United star Gary Pallister has insisted that Rasmus Hojlund's struggles in front of goal are similar to ones Andy Cole suffered with before his legendary days at Old Trafford.

Hojlund has gone 21 consecutive games without scoring for United with him managing just seven goals across 38 games. His form has resulted in many urging Ruben Amorim to sign a prolific number nine at the end of the season.

In the last Premier League game against Arsenal, the Denmark international's lack of confidence was there for all to see. The ball fell kindly for the striker after a defensive mix-up, he hesitated and Declan Rice denied him.

Pallister, who won 15 trophies over nine years at United, has made comparisons with Cole's start to life at the club after his British record £7m arrival from Newcastle United. "He seemed to kind of freeze. Like, 'Oh my God, that chance has come to me," he told Express Sport.

"His touch wasn't the greatest and his awareness wasn't there, and that allowed the time for Declan Rice to make the tackle. But yeah, I'm sure when you go that amount of games without scoring goals…

"I mean, I've seen it happen to Coley [Andy Cole] when he first came. He missed a few chances, and then you see it eating away at him, and he starts overthinking things.

"And it took him a little bit of time before he really settled at Man United."

Hojlund has been backed by Pallister to come good at United, just as Cole did. The former Red Devil forward scored 121 goals, helping them win the famous 1998/99 treble. "Listen, I love the kid's attitude," he continued. "You can't knock him for his attitude, his willingness to run, his willingness to work, his willingness to be physical.

"But he's got to add a little bit more to his game, I would think, if he's going to succeed at Manchester United. But I wouldn't give up on him just yet because I think he's got the attitude to go and try and prove people wrong. So that's the foremost thing."
