New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Uttarakhand government to take urgent and long-term measures in a bid to contain forest fires in the state that has been tearing through the region for weeks now. The SC told the state government that they cannot depend on cloud seeding or rain and asked the State to take urgent steps.
The top court has adjourned the hearing to May 15.
During the hearing, the Uttarakhand government informed the SC that 398 fires were reported, among which 350 were "man-made". It named 62 individuals and 290 unidentified suspects.
Petitioner told the apex court that immediately after the fire, there was a land use change application filed before authorities saying a specific area has no forest after the fire. "So we know who is behind the fires? Of course the land mafia," the petitioner added.
Meanwhile, Indian Air Force's efforts to contain the fire in Paudi Garhwal were carried out by one Mi 17 V5 helicopter. On Wednesday, it made a total of eight sorties for 4:15 hours and dumped 1,77,00 litres of water on flames that have engulfed the forests.
"The Indian Air Force’s efforts in Pauri to control fire are commendable. The operations have played crucial role in managing the fire emergencies and has reduced the number of fires saving lives and environment. We thank the team for their swift response!!" Anamika, Joint Magistrate, Paudi Garhwal, said.
The Indian Army and Indian Air Force were deployed to contribute to the firefighting efforts. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said on Saturday that Indian Army and Air Force helicopters are helping in controlling the forest fires in the state. The fires reached Nainital on Saturday and engulfed several hectares of green cover.
As several regions in Uttarakhand are grappling with forest fires, destroying hectares of forest land, former Uttarakhand Chief Minister and Congress leader Harish Rawat said that forest fires cannot be controlled without increasing the humidity in the forest areas, quoted ANI. He claimed that in 2015-16, they had come up with a comprehensive plan for the same.
