Fundraiser To End Human Trafficking Set For Oct. 23

By NICK YAMASHITA

The Progress

The Clark County Fairgrounds will have a social-distanced fundraiser occurring in the lawn area on Friday, Oct. 23 beginning at 5 pm.

The event will be raising funds for four non-profit organizations, all of which focus on giving help and services to victims of sex and human trafficking.

Local community member and organizer, Amy Warburton, explained the origins of this annual event. She explained that she and three other local women plan a charitable event each year to help fight the criminal actions of human trafficking.

“Emily Reid, Erika Whitmore, Jamie Burt and myself have personal reasons and goals to try and do the best we can to help the cause of stopping this even and helping those we can who have been horribly affected by it,” Warburton said.

This year’s event will be a carnival-themed fundraiser with social distancing mandates being observed to keep attendees safe.

“Multiple businesses and community families have volunteered to host carnival booths and offer games and prizes for the community,” Warburton said. “We are simply asking for a recommended donation to enter. It is for a really good cause so please be super generous.”

Along with the carnival, there will be pumpkin painting with pumpkins donated by the Hardy Family Farm, the MVHS Agricultural Farm and the Warburton Family. Depending on the size of the pumpkin, the cost is $1 or $2.

Another type of painting will be available at a separate cost. Connie Mortenson and Cortnie Villezcas will be painting vehicle windows. The cost of the paintings will all be donated for the cause.

At approximately 7 p.m. a family-friendly movie will be shown, sponsored in full by the Lake Mead Baptist Church. The movie will be at the Logandale Ball Fields.

“We are so thankful for the Lake Mead Baptist Church for paying for all costs to show this movie,” Warburton said. “They really wanted to help out with this cause and they truly have!”

Additional items available include a Hot Dog Dinner for $5 each and T-shirts for $20. All donations or items can be purchased with cash or through Venmo.

“This is our second year doing a ‘End Human Trafficking’ Fundraiser and we were not even sure we were going to be able to do it,” Warburton said. “But no matter what, we knew we needed to see this through.”

“We were lucky enough to have some of the mandates loosened up a little bit, Warburton added. “But with that being said, we have to obey the mandates.”

All the funds raised this year will be used locally and in Las Vegas, Warburton said. The four organizations which will benefit will be The Embracing Project, Rape Crisis Center (RISE), Refuge for Women, and The Shade Tree.
