Kota Kinabalu: Sabah police will be working closely with their counterparts in Brunei to address transborder security issues on land and at sea. This includes sharing information related to security issues through an electronic system which acts as a platform for this purpose.

"Sabah shares a boundary with Brunei, thus, it is only right to work together and discuss matters related to security, especially where transborder crime is concerned," said Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Ramli Din.

Transborder crime includes car theft, human trafficking and issues linked to fraud and scams, among others.

He said this during a joint media conference held with Royal Brunei Police Force Commissioner Datuk Paduka Seri Mohd Jammy Muhd Shah Al-Islam at the State police headquarters in Kepayan, here, Monday.

Mohd Jammy is here on his inaugural three-day work visit to Sabah. He arrived at the State police headquarters donning his Brunei uniform as Ramli and his men greeted him.

Mohd Jammy proceeded to inspect the guard-of-honour, followed by the rendition of the national and state anthem during the welcoming ceremony.

"My visit is simply to strengthen ties and enhance cooperation between the two forces, especially since Sabah is a popular destination for the people of Brunei," said Mohd Jammy.

"We in the Royal Brunei Police Force hope for an atmosphere which is conducive to the safety of Brunei citizens visiting the State, and the same goes for Sabahans who will be visiting Brunei.

"As mentioned by Ramli, we want to improve cooperation in all areas, particularly when it comes to cross-border security issues which may be committed by citizens of Brunei or vice versa.

"Of course fast information sharing is most important for us in Brunei, especially when geographically speaking, Brunei is buffered by two Malaysian states, Sabah and Sarawak.

"Thus the reason we need this close relation to anticipate whatever crime that may happen in Brunei which we can address together, this is our main theme for our visit," he said.

Also on hand to receive him was Sabah Criminal Investigations Chief Datuk Salehhudin Abdul Rahman, among others. - Sherell Ann Jeffrey
